Indoor Air Quality Control  

 

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a growing concern. Most people spend about 90% of their time indoors. According to the recent studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 2-5 times higher than outdoor level. The quality of indoor air is important not only for occupants' comfort but also for their health. Poor indoor air quality has been tied to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Also, some specific diseases have been linked to specific air contaminants or indoor environments, like asthma with damp indoor environments. In addition, some exposures, such as asbestos do not cause immediate symptoms but can lead to cancer after many years. Poor IAQ can also lead to reduced productivity. 

 

Many factors affect IAQ. These factors include poor ventilation (lack of outside air), problems in controlling temperature, high or low humidity, recent remodeling, and other activities in or near a building that can affect the fresh air coming into the building. Sometimes, specific contaminants like dust from construction or renovation, mold, cleaning supplies, pesticides, or other airborne chemicals (including small amounts of chemicals released as a gas over time) may cause poor IAQ. DBT (Dry Bulb Temperature), RH (Relative Humidity), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), PM10 (respirable particulate matter) and TVOCs (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) are the most commonly used parameters to check the status of the IAQ in general. 

 

IAQ is also related to HVAC Engineering. When there is an IAQ problem, the first thing that we have to do is, measurement of the relevant parameters mentioned above using appropriate measuring instruments, in order to ascertain the status of the quality of indoor air. Once the status is known, it is then remedied in accordance with the widely accepted standards/guidelines such as those published by ASHRAE (American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers), ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist) and USGBC (US Green Building Council) etc., and using the other appropriate engineering tools. 

 

ITI started providing IAQ related consultancy services in late 2003 and since then more than 150 such jobs have been successfully completed.  Our clients included Banks, Foreign Institutions such as UNDP, Government Institutions such as Rupavahini Corporation, Educational Institutions such as CIMA, Foreign Embassies (Canadian Embassy), Factories (Brandix), Hospitals (Asiri Surgical) and Software Developers such as IFS and Millennium IT etc.
