ITI International Collaborative Project for “Enhancing Preservation of Fruits using Nano Technology”
ITI project team members Dr. Ilmi Hewajulige – Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Shanthi Wilson - Consultant Project Manager and Former PI, Ms. Manori Wijemanne –SDD Marketing, Ms. Shiranthi Perera – Laboratory Technician, Research Assistant Mr. Suneth Gunathilaka and Laboratory Assistant Anura Shantha, welcomed H.E. Ms Shelley Whiting, the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Ms Jennifer Lalonde, Counselor (Development) & Head of Cooperation, High Commission of Canada, when they visited Ellawala Horticultural Farm in Galkiriyagama, to examine the progress made by the project team. The Canadian visitors and team members were hosted to delicious breakfast during the visit by the projects industry collaborators, Ellawala Horticulture Pvt., Ltd., who are the projects industry collaborative partners. Mr Bandara from Ellawala Horticulture showed the Canadian visitors around the farm. ITI team members made use of the opportunity to demonstrate some of the technology outputs and described the ongoing trials being carried out to validate the use of the said technologies. The team was greatly encouraged by the interest shown by Her Excellency and Ms Lalonde, who also indicated their interest in visiting and observing the progress made in other project activity locations.
The project is funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) one of three new projects supported under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). The above project will help prevent post-harvest fruit losses that affect millions of farmers around the world, and build on the successful research carried out during CIFSRF’s first phase.
