Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease which has created socio-economic issues. Several plant species are being used for the treatment of diabetes due to their perceived effectiveness, minimal side effects and relatively low cost. Costus speciosus (wild ginger) has exhibited medicinal properties including hypoglycemic and normo-glycemic activities according to in-vitro and in-vivo studies. The novel trend is to incorporate such herbs and formulate functional food products which are more palatable, attractive and economical compared to drugs. The project is aimed at development of ready-to-drink (RTD) beverage and dry herbal tea with Costus speciosus and evaluation of the product quality including bioactivity.
