Elephant Early Warning System to mitigate HEC

(An Innovative solution to Manage human elephant conflict)

etl1

People who livesin border villages near jungles frequently suffer from wild elephant attacks, destroying their cultivations, homes/property and in some casestheirlives. The electric fence along the border of the village has solved the issue to a certain extent, but due to some shortcomings in functionality and long-term maintenance, it does not give the expected results to mitigate human elephant conflict (HEC).

etl2

Whatever the technological solution that has been implemented to mitigate the HEC, the involvement of the community is quite important. The success of the technological solutions will mainly depend on the contribution of the community.

A system to manage & mitigate HEC

In villages affected by human elephant conflict, the houses are located far apart from each other and are surrounded by their cultivated lands. As a result, it is difficult to request for help from neighboring community in case of an emergency, and this is one of the key reasons where most of the people get attacked. To mitigate wild elephant attacks, community level collective decision making and action is important. The electric fence is considered as the first level mitigation activity for HEC management. In general, elephants are considered as wise animals. So they can find ways to escape from the existing electric fence and come to the village for searching food to mitigate such elephant attacks safely the elephant early warning system (EEWS) is developed using existing mobile communication technology.

etl3

Our Solution to mitigate HEC.

The elephant early warning system consists of a main controlling station located in a safe location and a siren unit in the field. Depending on the geographic condition of the village, the number of sirens can be duplicated in order to improve the audibility to the entire village. The names of the villagers with their neighbors are entered to a database application which is executing in the EEWS server.

etl4

How system works?

When there is an attackfrom a wild elephantthe villager can dial the pilot number of the EEWS, where EEWS will send alert messages to the neighboring community. The siren installed in the middle of the village will activate in order to disseminate the disaster situation to people within the area. With the message and the sound from the siren the community members can gather and take preventive actions to mitigate the wild elephant attack.

How to locate an elephant inside a village?

When an elephant attacks a village, it can goanywhere inside the village. To trace the animal and to make the villagers aware, a mobile application was developed to be used in SMART phones. When a villager sees an elephant, he/she has to touch an icon on the SMART phone, where the others will receive the exact location of the elephant inside the village. To take the attention of the villagers the siren will start to give the audible warning.

Pilot scale project in Galgamuwa…

The system is installed in Wathupolagama and Ehetuwewa in Galgamuwa divisional secretariats, as a pilot project with the collaboration of Eco System Conservation and Management Project (ESCAMP) which functions under the Ministry of Wild Life. As a part of the project, electric fences have been installed

etl5
etl6 around the villages. The preventive maintenance of the electric fence was considered as an

important factor. Therefore, the “electric fence protection society/ community” was formed with the involvement of the community. All activities related to electric fence is conducted through this society. Therefore, to alleviate the elephant attacks more proactively, the implementation of the EEWS was done through the above societies. As a result, preventive maintenance work and payment of communication bills of the EEWS are done by the respective society in the village.

Room Acoustics: Science to improve sound quality

etl

Irregularities on surfaces of buildings is a fundamental problem that occur. These irregularities cause uneven sound dispersion and absorption reducing the clarity of sound or low sound quality. This is a highly unacceptable when it comes to places such as cinemas, auditoriums and theaters.

However, low sound quality could be improved using Room Acoustic measurements & modeling. In simple terms, sound quality could be measured and remedial steps could be recommended using computer software.

Room Acoustic measurements & modeling is one of the advance service where ITI offers, using ODEON-Room Acoustic Software and sound and vibration analyzing equipment Brüel & Kjær. All measurements are done according to the ISO 3382 standard for measurement of room acoustic parameters.

ODEON is an advanced acoustic modeling software which has won the world-wide acceptance among the researchers and acoustic engineers for prediction of room acoustics and Public Address systems in concert and opera halls, theatres, worship spaces, sports stadiums, open-plan offices, foyers, restaurants, music studios, underground and railway stations, airport terminals, industrial environments, and outdoor areas with complicated geometry.

The acoustic specialists at Electro Technology Laboratory are well trained in modeling any type of structure and to design optimized acoustic treatment system to achieve required architectural acoustic standards.

With this facility we, at ITI, are confident in providing more accurate acoustical designs with target reverberation time and clarity with minimal implementation cost for the acoustic treatment system.

During past years, the technology has advanced and created innovative new hi-tech electronic products in consumer electronics, health care and diagnostics, life sciences etc. As a result the technology behind analytical test instruments also advanced by introducing more sophisticated digital electronics with software and artificial intelligence to the instruments. During the recent years, ETL was able to gain knowledge in above new technologies and developed the capabilities to handle more complicated repairs in high tech instruments.

At present we have delivered our repair services to government and private sector research and testing laboratories to maintain their high tech analytical test instruments. Further we offer our services to universities and other government and private educational institutions to maintain and recover their instruments. In addition to recovery services we undertake to refurbish the old instruments with some value addition and make them reuse. Under this service we modify old ovens incubators heat chambers etc with modern state of the art digital controlling systems.

Case Study

"M9 on Rail" Again

In order to improve the train service in year 2000, ten Class M9 locomotives were imported from ALSTOM France. These were the first set of SLR locomotives having AC-AC traction system with microprocessor based control systems. As the new technology was not well known repairs and maintenance work was not done as required and eight locomotives were out of operation for last few years.

A request was made to ITI in September 2009 to inspect the standstill M9 locomotives at the electro loco shade at Maradana. The faulty units were identified as – the VIKING units (engine controller), CRT Units (the driver units of the IGBT’s) and the Dynamic resister grids (used for dynamic braking). Among these units the VIKING unit is the most important part because it is used to drive and control the engine of the locomotive.

In spite of inadequate technical information except for the User Manual, ITI engineers diagnosed the faults and repaired the three units within a reasonable time frame. As a result SLR was able to launce another M9 locomotive for service which help a lot to keep on going service to the public.

- Noise control solution for Perimal Glass PLC -

 Sever with electric vibrater

Perimal Glass is the largest glass container manufacture in Sri Lanka. The factory is located in Horana and the main raw material silica sand is transported from Naththandiya after washing. At Naththandiya a sand washing plant is located in the middle of coconut cultivation.

Due to continuous operation of the plant complains were present from the neighbours and ITI was contacted in order to find a solution. After performing the necessary study within the factory and the outside the factory it was identified that the main noise generating source as the main vibrator of the severe. Also it was observed that the noise is having a low frequency which proportional to the line frequency of the electricity supply. The main noise source was identified as two vibrators connected to two severs.

Acoustic enclosure

As a part of the noise control solution the frequency of the two sources were adjusted and reduces the noise level up to ascertain level. In order to achieve the required noise level an enclosure was constructed around the severe with necessary sound proofing layers. After installing the sound proof enclosure the noise level 52dB was achieved near the boundary.

- Noise control solution for Plenty Foods (Pvt) Ltd -

Hammer Mill inside a enclosure

Plenty Foods (Pvt) Ltd is a subsidiary company of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd (CBL) located in Pallekele mixed residential area. The company manufactures a serial product under the brand name of Samaposha. The product has the highest market share in Sri Lanka when compared to other similar products.

The operations of the plant generate high noise inside and the outside of the plant in various processing stages. The raw material rice, green gram and corn received to the factory are pump to silos inside the plant. For this process three high speed blowers are been used which produce massive noise. Also there are several grinding mills have various capacities which produce high noise during the operation.

Blower covered by a noise attenuator

After performing the initial noise measurements the noise levels of the individual machines were identified. It was proposed to install enclosures around the grinding mills, blowers and other noise generating machinery.

With this solution the noise level was reduced up to the proposed noise levels given in the legislations.
