Air Quality Monitoring

Analysis Laboratory - Air Quality Monitoring

Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) has been monitoring air quality for over 13 years. ITI provides a complete range of services related to air quality monitoring including:

  • Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (According to regulations published under the Gazette
  • Notification No. 1562/22 dated 15.08.2008)
  • Fugitive Dust Measurement (As specified in SCHEDULE IV of Gazette Extraordinary No 2126/36, dated 5th June 2019 Fugitive Dust Emission Standards)
  • Stack Emissions  (According to National Environmental (Stationary Sources Emission Control) Regulations, No. 01 of 2019. – Schedule I- Schedule III, According to the USEPA Methods
  • Indoor Air Quality Monitoring  (According to the customer’s request performing measurements, mainly Particulate Matter – PM10, PM2.5)

ITI has the experience, expertise and resources to monitor simple air quality meteorological indicators to complex volatile organics and fine particulates.

ITI has the country finest and worldwide accepted ambient air quality monitoring station which can be monitoring the following parameters according to CEA regulations.

  • Particulate Matter – (PM 10)
  • Particulate Matter – (PM 5)
  • Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
  • Ozone(O3)
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  • Methane (CH4)
  • Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC)
  • Other related meteorological parameters

ITI has the potential to perform the following stack emission methods according to the USEPA approved methods. (Method 01 – 07, Method 10, Method 17.)

Isokinetic Stack Sampler

  • Particulate Emissions (PM)
  • Sulfur Dioxide – SO2
  • Nitrogen Oxide – NOx
  • Carbon Monoxide – CO

Sampling and analysis of Particulate Matter, aerodynamic diameter is less than 10 μm in size (PM10) & Particulate Matter, aerodynamic diameter is less than 2.5 μm in size (PM2.5) in ambient air according to regulations published under the gazette notification No. 1562/22 dated 15.08.2008.

Method of Measurement

• Hi-volume sampling and Gravimetry

(Ecotech Model 3000 PM10 High Volume Air Sampler Manual Reference Method: RFPS-0706-162)

• Beta Attenuation
PM 10 – USEPA Ref Number EQPM-RFPS- 0706-162
PM 2.5 – USEPA Ref Number EQPM-0308-170

ITI has been conducting comprehensive environmental monitoring since 2006 with active involvement in air quality monitoring and assessments. Taking care to ensure the world’s natural resources are properly managed, we apply advanced techniques that have earned us recognition in environmental analysis, measurement and remediation. Our testing laboratories are equipped with most modern instruments and testing techniques to determine various analyte of interest from very low level to higher detection level. Test methods followed are local CEA approved standards and internationally accepted testing methodology (USEPA).

Examples of some other ambient air monitoring studies and surveys that have been designed and conducted by Industrial Technology Institute are:

  1. Air Quality monitoring at Norchcholai Coal Power Plant – Ambient air and stack emissions were monitored.
  2. Baseline survey on air and water quality at industrial zones in North Western Province located in Puttalam, Dankotuwa and Makandura.
  3. Environmental monitoring of Bandaranayke International Airport Development Project Package B Phase 2.
  4. The Minipe Left Bank Canal Rehabilitation Project (MLBCRP) – Monitored baseline conditions with respect to existing ambient air quality of the area covered by minimum 1 km distance from either side of the Minipe Anicut Left Bank Canal.
  5. Port Access Elevated Highway Project.
  6. Baseline survey on air quality at industrial zones in Western province.
  7. CGL International ECO (Pvt) Ltd (Solid Waste Disposal Centre, Urban Council Trincomalee)– Baseline study.
  8. CHEC Port City Colombo (Private) Limited – Port City Project.
  9. Southern Road Connectivity Project – Southern Expressway to Madurugoda- MAGA Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd.
  10. Southern Road Connectivity Project – K D Ebert & Sons Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, Moratuwa-Piliyandala road after the construction.

Consultancy Services

The Central Environment authority directs industrial plants, which are potentially responsible for pollution, to engage in regular and accurate monitoring and to cut down on emissions. For plant owners and operators, the challenge is not only to contribute positively to creating a clean environment through optimizing the production process but also to comply with a growing number of regulatory obligations. The Environmental Technology Section of ITI provides consultancy services to whose values are over the standards. Our friendly and professional staff are always ready to provide technical support to our customers. Please feel free to contact for required clarifications or to get a quotation. Please drop your quotation requests to clo@iti.lk.
